Enhancing Outdoor Products: Laminating Machines Revolutionize Durability and Functionality

2026-10-25

Laminating Machines (PUR hot melt laminating, solvent-based adhesive laminating, flame lamination, ultrasonic lamination, etc.) bond multiple layers including fabrics, waterproof and moisture-permeable membranes, foam, air-tight films and mesh fabrics. They produce sandwich-structured functional outdoor materials integrating waterproofing, moisture vapor transmission, wind resistance, thermal insulation and wear resistance.Laminating machines are core upstream equipment for outdoor gear manufacturing.

Main Outdoor Product Categories

  1. Outdoor Apparel: Jackets, ski suits, wind shells, cycling wear, hiking pants

Classic 3-layer construction: outer wear-resistant nylon/pongee + middle PTFE/TPU waterproof breathable membrane + inner skin-friendly mesh fabric.

PUR hot melt lamination is widely adopted for high-end orders. Adhesive is applied in dot pattern to avoid blocking micropores, maintaining good moisture permeability. The finished fabric features excellent wash resistance and temperature adaptability, which is preferred for export orders.

  1. Camping Gear: Tents, inflatable tents, inflatable sofas, air mattresses, tarps

  • Regular tarps and tent fabrics: Oxford fabric laminated with PVC/PE membrane for waterproofing, tear resistance and UV resistance.

  • Inflatable products: high-strength scrim fabric bonded with TPU air-tight membrane. Strict requirements on air tightness and delamination resistance under long-term sun exposure and water immersion. Dedicated airtight laminating lines are used.

  1. Outdoor Bags & Backpacks: Hiking packs, waist bags

Oxford or nylon fabric laminated with TPU waterproof film for rain protection. Some inner linings are laminated with foam for shock absorption.

  1. Water Sports Equipment: Life vests, floating mats, neoprene, SUP fabrics

Polyester scrim fabric, SBR neoprene and buoyant foam are laminated with TPU/PVC membrane. The composite meets requirements of air retention, buoyancy, seawater resistance and ageing resistance.

  1. Footwear, Gloves & Protective Gear: Hiking shoe uppers, ski gloves, knee/back braces

Stretch fabric combined with waterproof membrane and foam for waterproofing, warmth and cushioning.

  1. Others: Sleeping bags, tactical gear, rain covers, agricultural/engineering tarpaulins, PVC banner fabrics

Common Lamination Processes for Outdoor Fabrics

  • ✅ PUR Hot Melt Lamination (Premium mainstream) : Solvent-free, flexible adhesive layer, stable from -40℃ to 120℃, UV resistant, wash resistant, no blockage of breathable micropores. Ideal for waterproof jackets and inflatable goods for European and American markets.

  • Solvent / water-based adhesive lamination: Lower cost, used for ordinary tarps and simple rainproof materials. Limitations: prone to delamination and yellowing under prolonged outdoor UV and water exposure.

  • Flame lamination: Bond fabric and foam, soft and warm, suitable for sleeping pads and insulation cushions.

  • Ultrasonic lamination: Glue-free thermal bonding, no pinhole water leakage. Used for quilted insulated fabrics for cold-weather garments and thermal mats.

Key Quality Control Indicators for Outdoor Laminates (Frequently tested for foreign trade orders)

  1. Peel strength: No delamination after temperature cycling and water soaking
  2. Hydrostatic head (waterproof performance) & MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate)
  3. UV ageing resistance, wide temperature tolerance, seawater resistance
  4. Hand feel: Not stiff (full coating will easily clog breathable membranes)
  5. Environmental performance: Low VOC, compliant with EU REACH regulation

Summary

Single-layer fabric only provides basic wear resistance or wind shielding. Laminating machines combine base materials with functional films to endow materials with integrated properties such as waterproofing, breathability, air tightness and thermal insulation. They are essential processing equipment for functional fabrics used in hiking, camping and water sports.
